Alcohol restrictions during the Coronavirus epidemic

The Coronavirus restrictions on movement and gatherings are taking it’s toll on people and authorities are concerned that people will start binging on alocohol to get through the crisis. Many businesses have been shut down as part of the response to the crisis and this has isolated many people.

To try to combat this pattern of binge drinking and alochol dependency as well as the stock piling that people have been doing, the alcohol industry has implemented a suggested code of conduct and restrictions for purchasing alcohol. The restritions that a customer can purchase in one transaction was put together by Retail Drinks Australai and has been taken up by the big retailers such as BWS, Dan Murphy’s, Vintage Cellars and Aldi. The new restrictions will not be implemented in Western Australia as that state has already put in tight restrictions.

One of the main goals of these restrictions is to stop alcohol going down the same route as other high demand products such as toilet paper, pasta and hand sanitiser where panic buying has left shelves bare.

The limit imposed is a limit of two cases of beer, cider and pre-mixed spirits and 12 bottles of wine. Cask wines will be limited to two items.
